in anticipation of netflix and sky dance animation premiere of their new movie “spellbound”, marketing agency experiential supply partnered with lime media to create custom drivable replicas of the main character “monsters” from the film. the mom monster, “queen ellsmere” is played by nicole kidman, and the dad monster “king solon” is played by javier bardem.
the process to bring the monsters to life began with a concept sketch to visualize the project, followed by detailed renders and build drawings. the build started with the decommissioning of two chevy 2500 trucks. each truck had a custom steel frame fabricated to form the base body shape of each monster. after the steel frame was in place, mesh wire was applied and the monsters were covered in spray foam. over several days, our special projects division hand-carved the foam to achieve the exact shape of the characters. the monsters were then covered in fiberglass and epoxy, and the team hand-brushed details to create a fur-like texture and appearance for the female monster. the monsters were painted in multiple stages, receiving several base coats as well as hand-detailed airbrushing.
the day before the premiere, the monsters drove around nyc, stopping traffic and gathering mass attention on social media. at the premiere, nicole kidman and javier bardem were surprised to see their characters in life-like form and posed for pictures with their monster. following the premiere, the monsters made an appearances at at&t stadium in dallas as well as on the streets of los angeles and at the homes of jessica alba and john legend and their families.
